Kimball boys’ basketball team stays hot

The Kimball Cubs finished the week in winning fashion. Thursday, Jan. 23, Kimball hosted the Pierz Pioneers, and pulled out the victory in the waning seconds, 64-62. With Kimball down by one point and just a dozen seconds remaining, Joey VonWahlde knocked down a W-Cubs-vs-Pierz-121three-pointer, sealing the victory and moving the Cubs to 10-5 overall. “We switched defenses out of the timeout and it confused them so they were unable to get a good shot as a desperation attempt as the buzzer went off,” said coach Jay Klein. This was the Cubs’ first conference win at home this year. “Joey VonWahlde’s clutch shot was huge for us as Pierz had all the momentum late in the game. Cameron Hunt, our primary ball handler, had fouled out with two minutes to play. Everyone on the floor had to help in handling the ball late in the game,” an excited coach Klein said. Jarred Merchant led the Cubs with 21 points and seven rebounds, VonWahlde finished with 15 points, Cameron Hunt had 14 points and Mathias Hennen added 10 points. The Cubs (4-4 CMC, 10-5 overall) went 12-for-14 at the free-throw line.
