One of Minnesota’s premiere museums partners with the world’s largest cultural institution
The Stearns History Museum, the museum of the Stearns County Historical Society, is announcing that it has been accepted to join a small group of leading national museum and cultural organizations as an Affiliate of the Smithsonian Institution. Of the 562 museums in the State of Minnesota, the Stearns History Museum is the only Smithsonian Affiliate.
The Smithsonian Affiliations program allows selected organizations to have greater access to the millions of artifacts in its renowned collections and to the distinguished educational resources of the 19 museums and galleries, the National Zoological Park and nine research facilities of the Smithsonian Institution. Established in 1996, the Affiliations program has built partnerships with more than 180 museums, educational and cultural organizations in more than 40 states, Panama, and Puerto Rico. It allows Affiliates to obtain long-term loans of art, artifacts, and books from many of the Smithsonian’s collections. It also fosters resource sharing, educational initiatives, scholarly exchange, and research efforts. Affiliate organizations are selected for their record of presenting high-quality exhibitions, scholarship, museum educational programs, and professionalism.
