Cokato Historical Society receives grant

Society receives Minnesota Historical and Cultural Grant for continued glass plate scanning and digitization

The Cokato Historical Society has received a grant in the amount of $10,000 from the Minnesota Historical and Cultural Grants program. This grant will be used to fund Phase VI of the continued scanning and digitization of glass plate negatives from the Gust Akerlund Photography Studio collection. For this phase, 2,000 of the 5x7 plates will be scanned, with digital copies produced for archiving. Upon completion of this phase, nearly 85 percent of the more than 11,380 plates in the collection will have been scanned and digitized.

Funds distributed through this program are generated by the Clean Water, Land & Legacy Act constitutional amendment passed by the voters of Minnesota in November 2008. This amendment increased the state sales tax by
3/8 of 1 percent, with the funds separated as follows: Outdoor Heritage; Clean Water; Parks & Trails; and Arts & Cultural Heritage.  The State Historical Preservation Office of the Minnesota Historical Society administers the portion of the Arts & Cultural Heritage funds made available to museums and historical agencies.

For more information about the Legacy Amendment funding, visit the web site of the Minnesota Historical Society, www.mnhs.org, and click on the “Historical and Cultural Grants” link.

Information about the Akerlund Studio can be found at the museum’s web site: www.cokato.mn.us, and click on the “Cokato Museum” link, or call (320)
286-2427.

The Cokato Museum is a cooperative effort of the City of Cokato and the Cokato Historical Society.
