In order to recognize achievement, outstanding progress, and responsible behavior in our student body, grade-level teams made up of teachers select one Kimball Area High School student in each grade to be recognized as the Student of the Month. The monthly winners are recognized in school, on the school website, and in the Tri-County News. They also receive a Subway gift certificate and Chamber Bucks from the Kimball Area Chamber of Commerce. Special thanks to Luxemburg’s Subway and the Kimball Chamber of Commerce for sponsoring this program. The following students are recognized for February 2013:

It appears that Mother Nature has not finished with the Kimball Speechers quite yet. Tuesday, Feb. 19, with snow falling and high winds across south central Minnesota, resulted in several school closings, including Willmar, where the speechers were planning to compete. With no meet, students instead had a large team practice. Their hard work paid off for them at Maple Lake Saturday, Feb.23.
Together, the team brought home their second first-place trophy in the Small Team category, along with several individual awards. Olivia Straley placed sixth in Storytelling, and Holly Dahlinger and Danielle Helgeson placed third in Humorous and Serious Prose. Katelyn Lichte won third place in Extemporaneous Speaking. Placing second in Serious Drama was Logan Bartholomew, and Maicy Vossen earned a second place in Storytelling. Alissa Jones also placed second in Extemporaneous Reading. Last but far from least, Jonathan Bisila is the Champion in Great Speeches. Congrats to all Kimball Speechers on a great tournament.
Congratulations to Shelby Schiefelbein who was selected as a 2013 EXCEL Award Winner. Each school in Minnesota has an award winner, and state winners are selected from a panel of judges from schools throughout Minnesota.
This is the 17th year that the MSHSL has sponsored this award. Shelby was the KAHS representative, who was then chosen by this panel as a state winner.
Shelby’s profile will be aired throughout the broadcasts of all winter state tournaments on Channel 45.
Saturday, March 16, she will be presented a plaque during half-time of the Class AA championship Girls Basketball Tournament. The championship game will begin around 7:30 p.m.
EXCEL (Excellence in Community, Education and Leadership) - is a recognition program designed exclusively for Minnesota high school juniors who are active in school activities, and who volunteer in their communities.
Shelby participates in volleyball, softball, band, choir, and speech. She is a member of Knowledge Bowl, National Honor Society, Student Government, and a Minnesota Beef Ambassador. Shelby volunteers in Vacation Bible School, the food shelf and senior dining crafts.
