Ridgewater Summer Camp offered

Friday, June 7, is the Early Bird deadline to register for the 2013 Ridgewater College Summer Camp set for July in Hutchinson and Willmar. The Hutchinson event will be Monday, July 22 through Thursday, July 25, from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. each day. The Willmar camp is set for the same times but from Monday, July 29, through Thursday, Aug. 1.

The events provide numerous fun, hands-on and educational career and interest explorations for youth entering grades 5-8. Again this year, all campers will experience all sessions rather than having to choose. Campers will experience three to four new career/interests each day of camp. Depending on whether you attend camp in Hutchinson or Willmar, exploration sessions may include hydrology, taxidermy, photography, color science, electronics, animals, computer graphics, automotives, plant science, baking, the Native American culture, creative writing and arts, and a variety of health care such as occupational therapy and nursing.

On March 2, students from across the region participated in the Minnesota’s second VEX Robotics World Qualifying competition held at the River’s Edge Convention Center in St. Cloud.

Our local Boy Scout Troop 15, naming themselves the “Boss Botz,” received several awards that day. One was the Excellence award, the highest honor in the VEX Robotics Competition. This will allow the boys to compete in the 2013 Vex World Championship, scheduled April 17-20, in Anaheim, Calif., where thousands of students from more than 30 countries will compete.

Boss Botz project for Boy Scout badge

The Boss Botz are a group of local teens that initially started working together for a badge they needed for the Cold Spring Troop 15 Boy Scouts. It includes Austin Johannes of W-CIMG2705-croppedSt. Cloud, Nolan Flint of Richmond, Jake Cossart of Rockville, and Caleb Anderson, Hunter Schreifels and Tanner Schreifels from Kimball. They started working 18 months ago to build a robot to use in competition. St. Cloud vocational school, Vex robotics, and 360 degree are companies that encourage youth to learn about robotics. The kids are encouraged to sketch multiple designs to try out, starting with a basic kit of parts. They learn with a great hands-on approach. Building the robot is only the first step. The kids then learn programming skills to run the robot in an autonomous mode.

Each year the course the robots use changes. Last year, the robots were built to pick up balls and cylinders and drop them into chutes. This year’s robots need to pick up bean bags and place them in a trough, or an elevated platform. As part of the competition the kids learn offense and defensive strategies, and partner with other teams for each match they compete in, and a 3-team alliance for finals.
