Boss Botz project for Boy Scout badge

The Boss Botz are a group of local teens that initially started working together for a badge they needed for the Cold Spring Troop 15 Boy Scouts. It includes Austin Johannes of W-CIMG2705-croppedSt. Cloud, Nolan Flint of Richmond, Jake Cossart of Rockville, and Caleb Anderson, Hunter Schreifels and Tanner Schreifels from Kimball. They started working 18 months ago to build a robot to use in competition. St. Cloud vocational school, Vex robotics, and 360 degree are companies that encourage youth to learn about robotics. The kids are encouraged to sketch multiple designs to try out, starting with a basic kit of parts. They learn with a great hands-on approach. Building the robot is only the first step. The kids then learn programming skills to run the robot in an autonomous mode.

Each year the course the robots use changes. Last year, the robots were built to pick up balls and cylinders and drop them into chutes. This year’s robots need to pick up bean bags and place them in a trough, or an elevated platform. As part of the competition the kids learn offense and defensive strategies, and partner with other teams for each match they compete in, and a 3-team alliance for finals.

Piano students present an imaginative recital

Music has the ability to transport us to the far reaches of our imaginations. This certainly was the case at a Spring Piano Recital which took place at Ostmark Lutheran Church, Watkins, Sunday May 5. The music-makers are students of local teacher, Barb Root. Family and friends enjoyed the elementary students’ musical depictions of such things as a pony, a cat, a puppy, a lady bug, a song of joy, fun in the backyard, a music-box dancer and a festival and a roller-coaster ride. High School students shared selections from The Phantom of the Opera and The Exodus. Renditions on Hawaii’s Kilauea Volcano and a Bridge to Forever were performed. Chopin’s E-flat Nocturne and “A New Hiding Place” by 20th century African composer, Harry Burleigh, concluded the program.

Two weeks later, the Lake Area Music Teachers’ Forum held four Honors Recitals. The first two took place Friday, May 17, at the Gethsemane Lutheran Church, Dassel, followed by two on Sunday afternoon, May 19, at the First Baptist Church, Cokato.
