Valley Daze 2014 is another success

Everyone expected severe thunderstorms all weekend. But, other than a gully-washer Thursday night,
the weather was great. That evening’s family kick-off event was moved indoors (see bottom, far right) into the Event Center, which seemed to work quite well, especially after the rains started.W-DSCF3599

Friday’s activities included lots of food and beer, of course. The Business Expo and Healthy Communities silent auction went on Friday and Saturday inside the Event Center (Library). Annandale Paintball had a big set-up across from city hall where kids could practice shooting, or take on opponents inside a closed course, both Friday and Saturday. Inflatable bouncers, sponsored by Arvig, were up for kids both days too.DSCF3821-RGB

Congratulations, Fair Haven Royal Ambassadors

It nearly didn’t happen. For awhile it looked as though the Fair Haven Old Settlers Picnic wasW-109-fhos running out of steam. Like so many things in small towns, those who had led it for many years were tired and quitting. It was difficult to get contestants to enter; last year there was no queen program in Fair Haven.

This year, with new blood infused, the Old Settlers Picnic joined the Royal Ambassadors program. The four girls who applied this year had to complete an essay about the community’s history, and create a cover letter and résumé. This year marked the 88th year of Old Settlers.

July 4: Clear Lake Parade of Boats

Plan to join the Clear Lake Annual Parade of Boats on July 4.

Fly a flag and decorate your boat to celebrate the Fourth of July in the annual Clear Lake Parade of Boats at 1 p.m. Friday, July 4, on Clear Lake, Watkins. Plan to display your red, white, and blue and your patriotism, and join us in a  parade around the lake with your boat. The parade begins at the County Park dock on the east side of the lake at 1 p.m., and is led by Guy Bobendrier.

Fair Haven to select Royal Ambassadors

Pretty girls in pretty dresses. Beauty pageant queens, in their crowns and sashes, waving at crowds from the back of convertibles, hoping for world peace and a great tan. Isn’t this a common perception of royalty programs?

The new coordinators for the Fairhaven Royal Ambassadors are hoping to change that perception. Under the direction of a whole new Old Settlers Day Committee, chaired by Pam Schindele, the royalty program has undergone an overhaul that is much overdue. To begin with, no longer will there be a Queen and Princesses. Instead, there will be three equal Royal Ambassadors to represent the Old Settlers Picnic and community of Fairhaven. A Miss Congeniality will be chosen by her fellow candidates, but she will receive a gift instead of a crown and will not participate in parades and other events. Both changes bring Fairhaven in line with other towns and festivals.
