Watkins Blood Drive July 24

This is a reminder that the American Red Cross will hold a Blood Drive at the Watkins Village Hall from 1-7 p.m. Wednesday, July 24.

Callers are scheduling appointments, but more donors are needed. Please encourage a family member, friend, or neighbor to join you or to consider donating. Of the population that qualifies to be donors, only about 5 percent do so. Blood is something you can give away to save lives and your body replaces it by itself in a short time.

The cast of “Footloose!” wowed audiences in three performances last week. Cast, crew and musicians spent half their summer working hard in rehearsal. The Kimball Community Playhouse summer musical production was in part made possible by Legacy funding. Staff photo by Marguerite Laabs.

Kingston Johnson-Kelly American Legion Auxiliary, June 25

Members met for their regular monthly meeting Tuesday, June 25, at Kingston Johnson-Kelly Hall. Meeting called to order by president Lauri Wills. Prayers by chaplain Chris Jeppesen. The members of the Kingston Johnson-Kelly post 483 joined the auxiliary members for opening exercises, all repeating the Pledge of Allegiance, singing the “Star-Spangled Banner,” and repeating the Preamble to the Constitution of the American Legion and Auxiliary. Separate meetings were then held. Secretary Judy Compton read minutes of the last meeting, and roll call showed 15 members present. Unfinished and new business were discussed.

Installation of officers for the 2013-14 year took place with Alice Root, past president, assisting. President Micki Turja, First Vice President Marie Williamson, Second Vice President Jessica Campbell, Third Vice President Lois Wills, Sergeant at Arms Linda Atkinson, Secretary Rose Olson, Treasurer Mary Jane Arens, Exclam. Chris Jeppesen and Ann Hamilton, Historian Chris Jeppesen, Public Relations Ann Hamilton.

Alice Root is on record for being the first president of the Auxiliary when it was formed May 21, 1962.

Annual memorial service also was held, presented by our chaplain Chris Jeppesen, honoring all our deceased members.

Sandy Smith and Micki Turja attended the annual spring American Legion Auxiliary Convention Saturday, June 8 at New London. The day consisted of business meetings with information for the American Legion and Auxiliary for the year, including the consideration of resolutions from Auxiliaries and the election of officers. The past district president was Jodi Meckle, and new president for 2013-14 will be Pat Ecker.

The department American Legion and American Legion Auxiliary convention will be held at Mahnomen, Minn., July 18-20. The Auxiliary convention will be highlighted by a visit from Northwest Division Vice President Doris Ann Werlinger of South Dakota. Our department president Raleen Tolzmann should be present at the American Legion Auxiliary convention.

Friday, June 14 was Flag Day. Were you patriotic and flew your flag?

Girls State was held at Bethel University June 9-15. It was the 67th session of the American Legion Auxiliary Minnesota State, with about 370 women learning about Minnesota government by actually running a government.

A delicious lunch was served by Alice Root and Barb Root.

The members of the Kingston Johnson-Kelly American Legion, Honor Guard and Kingston Johnson-Kelly American Legion Auxiliary will be present in Litchfield Tuesday, July 16, to see off three busloads of Litchfield area National Guard members who are being deployed to Afghanistan; these 99 Guard members will be on their way to Texas for training. Buses will leave the Armory at 9 a.m., drive through Litchfield main street, then travel past Darwin and Dassel. We all wish them a safe trip, and keep them in our thoughts as they serve.

Let’s all fly our flags, also in their honor, and remember all the service men and women wherever they are serving.

The next meeting of the Kingston Johnson-Kelly American Legion and American Legion Auxiliary will be Tuesday evening, Aug. 27. Our membership dues will be due that evening.

Enjoy the Fourth of July, and fly your flags.

Public Relations, Ann Hamilton
