The Kimball American Legion Auxiliary hosted the event. They presented the folding of the flag, explaining the meaning of each fold, and the MIA/POW table which honors all those who are missing in action or prisoners of war.
But the honored participants were veterans, both those who were scheduled to attend and several from the audience.
Kimball mayor Tammy Konz presided over the program.
MSgt Darrel Nilson was one of two scheduled speakers. His questions to the audience, mostly students, prompted them to think of veterans as like any one of us: a 55-year-old grandmother who can still out-run most of us in a two-mile, a 19-year-old female college student, a 58-year-old man, etc. They are busy living their lives and contributing to society. And they have served and sacrificed much.
Gary Caauwe of Kimball shared his experiences in Vietnam. He was drafted, served in the trenches, and returned to the San Francisco airport where returning soldiers were pelted with rotten tomatoes.
Ashley Bogatzki compiled photos of local veterans into a slide show that played in the background of the whole program. Band director Keith Haake played Taps at the end of the program.
