Saturday, Sept. 15, posed some challenges for the Cubs. After a long day of volleyball, the team finished with two wins and two losses. Because the losses came early in the day, the team finished 13th in the tournament.
The varsity volleyball team opened a 16-team tournament against Sauk Centre, ranked third in the state currently in Class 2A. With a high-tempo, powerful offense and seamless defense, the Mainstreeters handed Kimball their first loss of the day. Set scores were 9-25 and 8-25. Over the course of the day, the Mainstreeters would go on to win the tournament championship. Breane Meierhofer had four kills in the match; Holly Donnay had four set assists while Tiffany Kuechle has three assists.
After playing Sauk Centre, the Cub faced the Pierz Pioneers. While matches were close, the Cubs could not pull out a set win. Scores were 21-25 and 26-28. Laura Frank led the team with 7 kills and 3 ace serves. Breane Meierhofer contributed 6 kills and 6 digs. Tiffany Kuechle had 9 set assists and 6 digs.
In the third match of the day, the Cubs played the Onamia Panthers. With an efficient offense and better passing performance, the Cubs were able to score a match win, 25-13 and 25-21. Statistical leaders for the team included Breane Meierhofer with six kills, Laura Frank with four kills and Holly Donnay with three kills. Tiffany Kuechle added seven set assists. Frank had three ace serves.
The final match for the Cubs pitted them against the Mora Mustangs. Both teams struggled to establish dominance. In a three-set battle, the Cubs pulled out a win. Scores were 25-22, 19-25, and 15-12. Laura Frank and Breane Meierhofer each had 5 kills. Tiffany Kuechle has nine set assists; Kenadi Mackereth added five assists. Lexi Rose provided seven digs.
The Cubs are now 6-5 overall. Upcoming matches include home events against Norwood-Young America on Monday, Sept. 17, and Pierz Thursday, Sept. 20.
