By Mark Anthony,
Weather column: This time of the year, along with spring months, can be some of the windiest days. This is a transitional period as colder air is starting to move in from the north and very warm air is found to our south. This contrast brings strong pressure gradients and very strong winds at times.
That was the case last Saturday (Sept. 8) and again on Monday, Sept. 10. Winds were gusting at times to 40 mph and this caused travel concerns for some residents who hit the roads over the weekend and again on Monday.
In addition, with the very dry conditions around the state, the winds help to fan wild fires. As a result, the National Weather Service issued fire dangers around the state Because of the high winds.
Things settled down on Tuesday as the winds backed down, and some pretty decent weather looks promising right into the weekend. There will be only a small chance of rain along the way, however. The winds should actually be quite light through the weekend and that could bring us some fog late at night and into the morning hours. This is another problem this time of the year!
It's always something isn't it, in the weather department!
Have a great weekend!
Weather history: On this date in 1964 residents woke up to a cold morning as temperatures dropped into the upper 20s across northern Minnesota and into the 30s in central and southern Minnesota.
Weather fact: There's no doubt that Minnesota can have a very cool climate, but did you know that it's actually not the coldest State in the U.S.? In fact, it's not even the second or third coldest State in the U.S., it's the fourth according to data from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), for the years 1971-2000.
