The annual Town Meeting and Election of Maine Prairie Supervisors was held March 9, 2004, at the Kimball Area Fire & Rescue Hall. The polls were opened at 12 noon and closed at 8 p.m. with the business meeting following the counting of the ballots at 8:30 p.m. Total votes cast for Township Supervisor: James Unterberger 60, Tom Weber 32, write-in Bob Stein 1, blank ballots 0. James Unterberger was re-elected Supervisor for a term of (3) three years. Clerk Beverly Adolph opened the Maine Prairie Township annual meeting with the pledge to the flag. Clerk Beverly Adolph called to elect a moderator: Motion was made and seconded to elect Gary Woods as moderator of the meeting. Moderator Gary Woods called for a reading of the minutes of the March 11, 2003, annual meeting. Minutes were read by Adolph. Motion was made and seconded to accept the minutes as presented. Woods called for the treasurer's report. Clerk/Treasurer Adolph presented the report. motion was made and seconded to accept the report as read. Woods called for old business: No old business discussion occurred. Woods called for new business. First item on the agenda was mowing and spraying of road right-of-way. After discussion, a motion was made and seconded for the township to spray, commending in July. Site permits: A motion was made and seconded that no permits be issued for general maintenance and shingling. However, it is strongly suggested that all township residents still need to call a Planning Board member before doing any home improvements so that no penalties would have to be assessed. Fire contracts: Kimball Fire Chief Tom Ehlinger answered questions pertaining to fire protection within Maine Prairie Township. Chairman Unterberger reported that the fire contract this year will be $73,613.64. Plowing snow on township roads: The supervisors reminded everyone that plowing snow from driveways onto or across public roads is unlawful in the State of Minnesota. Donations: Motion was made and seconded for the township to donate to the following organizations: Kimball Community Ed., $1,500; Watkins Ambulance Service, $1,500; Kimball Community Playhouse, $500. Township having their own building/hall: Discussion was held regarding the exploration of building a township hall in the future. This would alleviate any future rental payments to the City of Kimball for use of the Fire Hall. A motion was made and seconded to set up a building fund for a future Maine Prairie Township Hall. After a lengthy discussion, the township residents recommended that the Board Supervisors attend a Kimball City Council meeting to discuss issues brought to their attention at the annual meeting. New business: There was a question from the floor regarding annexation, and what the view of the board was regarding future annexation. The bottom line is that we want to protect the agricultural land and remain a rural entity. Budget was set for 2004, payable in 2005. Motion was made and seconded to adjourn.
