Week starts on a cold note

The beginning of the week surely started off on a cold note around the state of Minnesota. Park Rapids fell to eight below zero for the morning low on Monday. Bemidji was close behind with a morning low of seven below zero. Meanwhile, Alexandria dipped to “only” five degrees above zero for the morning low. That was still chilly as the normal low for this time of the year for Alexandria is 14 degrees.

These readings were nowhere near the record low temperatures for those locations, however, as the record low for Park Rapids on Monday was 19 below zero set back in 1977. Bemidji’s record low temperature for Monday was 18 below zero also set in 1977.

If any of you were on the roads on Thanksgiving Day, parts of Minnesota were very dangerous, as you know, as some rain, freezing rain, and snow all fell during the late afternoon and evening. My wife, sisters, and I were all driving back from Minneapolis to Alexandria when the roads were treacherous from Monticello to Sauk Centre. We counted about 20 vehicles in the ditch during that stretch. Thankfully, we made it back safely.

Also, in Texas, fog made for very dangerous conditions as well, on Thanksgiving Day as a 100-car pile-up caused 50 injuries and two fatalities at last report. This is a reminder of how dangerous and how quickly conditions can change. Please slow down and drive carefully during this Christmas and Holiday season!
