Council members voted for a pay increase effective Jan. 1, 2013: $125 per month for the mayor and $100 per month for council members, an increase of $25 per month. (The last pay increase was effective Jan. 1, 2006.) Winter parking rules are in effect from Nov. 1 through April 30: No parking on city streets between 2-7 a.m.; violating vehicles will be towed at owner’s expense. The Election Canvassing Board met Nov. 13 to certify the Nov. 6 election results. A total of 94 voters included 17 new registrants at the polling place that day; there were 5 absentee ballots. Mayor (2 years): John Lemke 53 votes; 31 write-ins (including 29 for Tony Stanley) Council (4 years, 2 seats): Tony Stanley 70 votes, Russ Christinsen (write-in) 31 votes. Kurt Hubbs (owner of 410 Oak Ave) wants to use it for his own personal residence. Scott Qualle of MNSPECT was there to answer questions. In August 2008, the property was approved for residential use for one or two families, with some work needing to be done. After some discussion, the council decided that Hubbs may use it as a private residence for his family provided that he works with the building official to obtain and pay for all required building permits for work already done, and for work yet to be done. Zoning changes may be needed should this property change uses in the future. (All voted in favor.) The next city council meeting will be 7 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 4, in the South Haven Fire Hall.
