By Coach Joe Stangle Royalton Royals Nov. 27 Tuesday, Nov. 27, we hosted the Royalton Royals to start our 2012-13 season. Our team includes sophomores Tori Denn, Emily Donnay, Mady Gasper, Dani Helgeson, Tina Kastanek, Maddy O’Brien, Hannah Serbus, and Nicole Vossen; junior Lexi Rose and senior Malina Röettgermann. We have shown improvement since the beginning of practice and were looking forward to this opening game. The game began with both teams showing some jitters, but Lexi Rose hit a three-pointer to get us going on a great pass from Hannah Serbus. Maddy O’Brien hit a jumper, Serbus made a triple and Rose added another three to put us up 10-2. O’Brien was able to make two more shots and Mady Gasper hit a driving lay up. Our defense played well and forced Royalton turnovers that led two more Rose baskets and Dani Helgeson ended the Lady Cub scoring in the first half up, 25-8. In the second half, our bench played hard on both ends to help us secure the non-conference victory. Helgeson made a layup, Tori Denn hit a shot and Nicole Vossen got her offense going making a jump shot. This kept us up 31-16, Emily Donnay made her first basket and Helgeson scored again to push the Kimball score margin back up to 19. Serbus made a steal and scored, Helgeson drained a post move and Tina Kastanek dropped in a two-pointer from distance. Helgeson added one charity shot and Serbus scored another basket to put us up 42-24. Malina Röettgermann made her first point on a free throw and Kastanek ended our scoring with one from the foul line. The Royals could only muster three more points after this, as Kimball cruised to a 44-27 win. Milaca Wolves Nov. 30 The Milaca Wolves came calling Friday, Nov. 30, in another non-conference tilt. They were playing their first game and we were confident coming off our win over Royalton. It was a battle for 32 minutes and the Lady Cubs did not go quietly. From the tip, it was evident that Milaca would use the three-point shot in the first half to force our hand defensively. Maddy O’Brien hit our first shot and Hannah Serbus drained a shot, as the score would see-saw back and forth throughout this game. O’Brien hit an “old fashioned” three pointer, along with another basket with us up 11-9 at the 12:33 mark of the first half. Tori Denn got an offensive rebound and a putback basket, Lexi Rose’s steal and assist led to a Hannah Serbus-made two pointer. Nicole Vossen pulled down a defensive rebound and then drained an excellent jump-stop jump-shot to tie the score at 13-13 with 6:32 to play in the half. To finish, Denn made a shot, added two free throws, another basket and Serbus knocked down our last shot of the half to lead by only one, 21-20. The second half adjustments by both teams allowed for even more back and forth action. Milaca’s full court pressure and the Lady Cubs defensive positioning caused havoc with both offenses. We could score only 10 more points on three Vossen baskets, a Denn putback and Dani Helgeson’s post move. We had chances, but were unable to convert. A solid offensive and defensive game was played by Mady Gasper, Emily Donnay and Malina Röettgermann. At the final buzzer, Kimball trailed by six, 31-37. We were proud of our defensive effort but we also know that we left some shots on the floor that could have turned the scoreboard in our favor. Future games Up next for the Lady Cubs, will be to travel to ACGC to take on the Falcons at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 4; home v the Paynesville Bulldogs at 6 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 6, and at Dassel-Cokato at 6 p.m. tip off Friday, Dec. 7, Thank you for supporting Kimball girls’ basketball.
