December 7 EVW Update

Building Project:

Progress on the secondary construction project continues, and we’re hopeful to move into the offices in January. Contractors have the windows and doors installed, most of the painting completed, casework and cabinets are hung, and the flooring is getting installed. Grazzini Brothers is on-site and completing the prep work for the terrazzo flooring that will be poured and then ground on Brook’s Street Lobby. This is a labor-intensive process with a very attractive end product that will take us into the New Year for completion. The gymnasium concrete continues to cure and dry, and if moisture content meets the industry standards, we could install the hardwood flooring sometime in January. Again, we’re very excited about the project, ongoing progress, and direction provided by Kraus-Anderson Construction.

Please stop in for a visit with your questions and comments, and be sure to exercise caution when you’re in the proximity of the construction zone.

General Economic News:

In many ways, the U.S. economy has improved in 2012. The unemployment rate has declined, although it is still high by historical standards. There are growing signs that the housing market is recovering. Stock prices have fluctuated, but the most widely tracked indices have generally increased; for example, the S & P 500 Index has increased by 12.6 percent since the end of 2011 and by over 4 percent in the last two weeks. Treasuries or the yield on the 10-year treasury has declined from 1.87 percent at the end of last year to 1.61 percent on Nov. 30, and other relatively safe investments, including municipal bonds.

2012 Minnesota Business Filings remain near all-time record levels as the Minnesota Office of the Secretary of State reported today 56,046 new businesses have filed with its office to date this year, 8,578 more than the same time last year. “November was another banner month in a year of strong new business filings,” said Secretary Ritchie. “We appear to be on track to reach a near record number by the end of 2012. This is great news for Minnesotans during this holiday season.”

Senior of the Week:

The EV-W School District would like to recognize Zach Blonigen, son of Thomas and Judy. Zach is ranked in the top 10 of his class academically, and on his way to graduating with an EV-W Honors Diploma. Zach was an instrumental player and leader on the Eagles Football team, and an essential member of the Eagles Wrestling program. He currently serves as Student Council President, serves Big Brothers program, and tutors elementary students. The EV-W administration, faculty and staff are extremely proud of your accomplishments.

Board members recognized for service:

Each year, during American Education Week we recognize our school board members for reaching designated milestones of service to the school district. This year, we recognized Frank Eder for 27 years and his retirement from the board, Joann Rademacher for 15 years, and Julie Meyer for 10 years of service to the district.

I’d like to commend all of our board members and thank them for their time, energy, vision, and leadership of the Eden Valley-Watkins School District.
