Cubs open with win over Royals

The Kimball Cubs opened their 2012-13 basketball season Tuesday, Dec. 4, by hosting the Royalton Royals. The Cubs jumped out to a 9-0 lead to start the game, only to see Royalton answer with a 9-0 run to tie the score. The scoring pace slowed down after the quick start, and the teams were tied at 12 with 11:26 remaining in the half. Kimball’s pressure defense forced the Royals into 13 first-half turnovers, which helped the Cub’s go into halftime with a lead of 43-25.

Kimball played very sloppy to start the second half. They turned the ball over four times in the first three minutes of the half, and allowed Royalton to cut into the halftime deficit. The Cubs continued to shoot the ball well in the second half (13/25 from the field) and withstood a late run by the Royals to hold on for an 82-66 victory.

The Cubs placed all five starters in double figures in scoring. Preston Peglow led the team with 15 points. Mathias Hennen (14), Austin Roerick (13), Jarred Merchant (12), and Cameron Hunt (10) were the other starters in double digits. Jarred Merchant and Austin Roerick each hauled down
10 rebounds. Cameron Hunt dished out eight assists and had five steals on the night. As a team, the Cubs were 29 of 58 from the field and 17 of 30 from the free-throw line for the game.

Poor defense costs Cubs in loss to Falcons

The Atwater-Cosmos-Grove City Falcons traveled to Kimball last Friday night, Dec. 7, to take on the Cubs. Kimball jumped out to an early lead, and with nine minutes left in the half, found themselves tied at 18 with ACGC. The Falcons shot the ball well in the first half (five three-pointers) and led by 11 (42-31) at the break.

In the second frame, the Cubs slowly worked their way back into the game. With 9:44 left, the Cubs trailed by three (53-56). Preston Peglow hit a three-point shot to give Kimball the lead, 63-62, with about six minutes remaining. The teams traded baskets for a stretch until the Falcons took control (75-66) with just over three minutes to play. ACGC made their free throws down the stretch to defeat the Cubs 89-73.

Kimball placed four scorers in double figures. Jarred Merchant led the team with 24 points, followed by Mathias Hennen (12), Austin Roerick (11) and Ed Nielsen (10). Merchant and Nielsen were the rebounding leaders with nine and six respectively. Cameron Hunt had six steals and 10 assists, and Mathias Hennen added four steals while Connor Wittenberg chipped in with four assists on the night. The Cubs turned the ball over 24 times in the game, which really hurt their chances against the Falcons. Kimball now stands at 1-1 on the season. They will be on the road this week, traveling to Norwood-Young America and Maple Lake.
