Chief Kenneth Laney reported five fire calls and four rescue calls during November. They are looking into the cost of purchasing at least one additional ice rescue suit. They are looking to hire additional firefighters. There have been complaints about the length of time trains block the crossings in the city, often more than the
10 minutes allowed. Councilor Stanley will contact CP Rail. Progress has been made on the South Haven community city hall. Colors have been selected, some concrete work has been done, and they are working to complete the exterior so that interior work can be completed this winter. In other business, the council moved to raise pay for most employees: 25 cents an hour for bartenders with more than one year; 2.5 percent for the bar manager; 2.5 percent for the city clerk/treasurer; 25 cents per hour for the city park & street/blvd. general maintenance employee. The waste/wastewater operator is part-time and underpaid based on comparable positions and responsibilities elsewhere; there was discussion about raising his level of pay gradually to make it more in line with the job responsibilities. His pay was raised to $15 per hour. (Fire Department are handled separately, and not affected by these decisions.) The final budget and levy were approved for 2013: $172,623 budget and $109,297 levy. The city office will be closed early Dec. 21, and closed Dec. 24 thorugh Dec. 26, for Christmas Holiday. The office will be open Dec. 27-28, and closed Jan. 1.
