Cubs boys’ basketball two games



Cubs v Norwood-Young America, poor shooting dooms Cubs

The Kimball Cubs traveled to Norwood-Young America last Tuesday night, Dec. 11, to take on the Raiders in a section 5AA basketball game. Both teams struggled early taking care of the basketball as turnovers mounted. The game was close throughout the first half, with the largest margin being 6 points. Norwood-Young America led by a score of 24-22 at the half.

The second half proved to be just as competitive as the first. With 7:50 left in the game, The Cubs trailed by one (38-39). At that point, the Raiders made consecutive three-pointers to stretch the lead to 7. Kimball kept battling, but could not make enough shots to get back into the game. The Cubs lost by a score of 52-42.

Preston Peglow led the Cubs in scoring with 14 points. Ed Nielsen had a great game off the bench with 8 points and 12 rebounds. Jarred Merchant was the leader in steals with four and Connor Wittenberg had four assists. The Cubs shot 27 percent from the field (15/56) and 77 percent (10/13) from the free throw line. Kimball had a good night in the turnover category committing only
12 while forcing 21. The loss puts the Cubs at 1-2 on the season.


Cubs earn conference victory over Irish

The Maple Lake Irish hosted the Kimball Cubs on Friday, Dec. 14, in the conference opener for both teams. The game was very competitive from the start. The teams answered each other, basket for basket in the first half. Kimball did all of their scoring in the paint and at the free-throw line, while Maple Lake scored from inside and out. At the half, the Irish led by two, 27-25.

The game remained close in the second half. Some big baskets by Preston Peglow helped the Cubs gain the lead and build it to 8 points late in the contest. The Irish, however, would not go away. Maple Lake was forced to foul the Cubs and Kimball missed some free-throws that allowed the Irish to make it an exciting finish. Leading by 5 points with less than 10 seconds to play, Maple Lake made a three-pointer to cut the lead to two. Mathias Hennen then made two clutch free throws to clinch the game for the Cubs. The final score was Kimball 61 and Maple Lake 57.

Preston Peglow led the Cubs in scoring with 16 points. Cameron Hunt, Austin Roerick and Jarred Merchant each chipped in with 11. Austin Roerick hauled down 8 rebounds while Cameron Hunt dished out four assists and Jarred Merchant had three steals. The Cubs are now 2-2 on the season and have a busy week coming up. They host Milaca on Tuesday, Dec. 18, for Parent’s Night and host the Kimball Holiday Tournament on Thursday and Saturday.
