EV-W boys’ basketball shines bright in Christmas tourney opener

The EV-W Boys basketball team shined bright in the St. John’s Prep Christmas Tournament opener Thursday night, Dec. 20, as they exploded for a commanding 66-46 win over the Rush City Tigers.

Teamwork was chief in securing the victory, as the starting five shared the wealth. Sophomore guard Bret Mattice led the Eagles attack with 18. Kirby Knutson, senior forward, poured in 14, while senior guard Alex Geislinger, tallied 13. Sophomore forward Jared Streit tossed in 11, and Brent Stenger, senior guard, finished with 9. The Tigers pounced on the Eagles and took a 29-28 advantage at the halftime break, but the second half was all Eagles, as they soared to an imposing win, outscoring their opponents 38-17.

At press time, it was yet undetermined who the Eagles next opponent would be. Other tournament participants include Milaca, Holdingford, Maple Lake, Rush City, Onamia, and St. John’s Prep. The regular schedule resumes with EV-W hosting Kimball Area  at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 3
