By Jay Klein, coachCubs defeat WolvesThe Kimball Cubs hosted the Milaca Wolves last Tuesday night, Dec. 18, in a section 5AA battle. Kimball jumped out to an early lead, 16-11, by forcing Milaca into a number of turnovers. The Cubs maintained that pressure and led by a score of 35-20 at the half.

Both teams played evenly much of the second half. With
7:39 to play, Kimball was leading by a 57-42 score. The Wolves made a run late to cut the lead to 12, but could get no closer. The Cubs went on to win by 16, 75-59. Jarred Merchant led the team in scoring with 17 points. Cameron Hunt and Mathias Hennen added 12 each. Merchant hauled down nine rebounds. Hunt dished out 11 assists and contributed six steals. The Cubs shot 31/68 (46 percent) from the field and 8/13 (62 percent) from the charity stripe. The win put the Cubs at 3-2 on the season, as they head into their holiday tournament.

Cubs take the sting out of Spectrum The Kimball Cubs hosted the Spectrum Sting in the first round of the Kimball Holiday Tournament. The Cubs jumped out to a commanding early lead at 20-2 behind their full-court pressure defense. Kimball hit 5 three-pointers in the first half, and also converted 10 shots from close range, to take a 47-10 lead into the half. The Cubs dialed back their pressure in the second half, and focused on their zone defense. Connor Wittenberg poured in
13 second-half points, as the Cubs went on to win. The final score was Kimball 81 Spectrum 26. The Cubs placed three players in double figures for the game. Preston Peglow (16), Cameron Hunt (16), and Connor Wittenberg (15) led the team’s scoring attack. Jarred Merchant grabbed eight rebounds. Cameron Hunt had six assists and five steals. Ben Serbus also had five steals. The win puts the Cubs in the championship game on Saturday against Watertown-Mayer. In the opening game, the Watertown-Mayer Royals defeated the Brandon-Evansville Chargers by a score of 76-47.
