The Cubs were led by their seniors as they took on a conference and section rival in Eden Valley-Watkins Thursday, Dec. 20. The Eagles won four out of the first five weights with Blane Tschida(113) getting the Cubs on the board with a pin in 3:02 over Tyler Donnay. The Cubs found themselves in a 6-24 deficit going into the 138-pound weight class where Quinten Berres fired the team up with a fall in 2:17 over Donavin McCann. Senior Marcus Hamer fought through an injury to help his team out and came up with a fall in 3:22 over John Salzl. Sophomore Tanner Schreifels (152) kept things rolling for the Cubs with an 8-2 decision win over John Unterberger. With this win, the Cubs pulled within three points.The Cubs lost the next two matches to EV-W two-ranked guys, giving up a pin and a decision win, leaving the Cubs trailing by a score of 21-33.
The Cubs needed their big guys to come up huge, and senior Travis Wills got things started with a 8-4 decision win over Luke Kuechle. Senior Austin Schlueter received a fall in 1:15 over Shelby Sheldon, and junior Devon Kelley pinned Matt Unterberger in 17 seconds. The Cubs finally took the lead in the dual 36-33, going into the heavyweight match, where senior Tim Konz sealed the win for the Cubs with a fall in 1:36 over Lyle Miller. The win over the Eagles puts the Cubs CMC record at 1-1 on the year and 4-5 overall. The Cubs will travel to Rochester for the Clash Wrestling Tournament Friday and Saturday, Dec. 28 and 29. The first round of wrestling will start at 4 p.m. Friday night, when the Cubs will take on St. Michael-Albertville.
