New Year’s Eve, Dec. 31, at about 8:19 p.m., Stearns County Sheriff’s Office responded to a snowmobile crash near the address of 44322 Hartnette Lake Road in Melrose Township. The caller said that a 33-year-old man from Grey Eagle had struck a tree. He was responsive but having a hard time breathing. The man became unresponsive and CPR was started before emergency responders arrived on the scene.
The man, whose identification is not being released pending notification of family, was taken to the Melrose Hospital where he was pronounced dead.
The crash is still under investigation, but alcohol is believed to be a factor in the crash. The snowmobile operator was the only occupant on the snomobile and he was wearing a helmet. The Stearns County Sheriff’s Office was aided by Melrose Police, Fire and Rescue and Ambulance, and the Minnesota State Patrol.
