Alice Martin of Mesa, Ariz., died Wednesday, Feb. 20, 2013, in Mesa, after a long battle with breast cancer. She was 70.
A memorial service will be held at Christ the King Catholic Church in Mesa, at 4 p.m. Monday, Feb. 25, with Rev. Steve Kunkel officiating, followed by a meal in the church hall. A rosary will be said Sunday evening at 7 p.m. at the home of Brett and Kelleen Meister in Mesa. A graveside service will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 27, at Queen of Heaven Cemetery in Mesa.
Alice Jean Martin was born Dec. 1, 1942, in Sibley, Iowa, to Margaret Helen (Sweeney) and Philip Fogarty. She graduated from Kimball High School in 1960, and was married to James Martin III, Oct. 10 1960, in Kimball. They then moved to Graettinger, Iowa, shortly after. The couple lived in Spencer, Iowa, Ankeny, Iowa, and Worthington, Minn., for a majority of their marriage, before retiring to Mesa in 2006 to be closer to family. Jim and Alice celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary two years ago.
She embarked on a decorated 30+ year nursing career in 1976. Following graduation from Iowa Lakes Community College as a Registered Nurse, Alice worked in various nursing capacities and supervisor roles, including work at Spencer Hospital, Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines, Iowa, Worthington Medical Center, and continued part-time nursing work at Mollen Clinic in the Phoenix area until the fall of 2012.
Alice loved quilt-making for her family and friends. She was an avid fan of the Minnesota Twins, Vikings, and Iowa Hawkeyes. She enjoyed Facebook, Words With Friends, family campout reunions, watching movies, baking, reading, and the occasional blizzard from Dairy Queen. She loved her dogs Mitzi and Maxi. Alice was a parishioner of Christ the King Catholic Church, was an adorer at the St. Peregrine Shrine, and was a part of a parish prayer group.
Alice was preceded in death by her parents, her sisters Phyllis Oviatt of Spencer, Iowa, and Colleen Speed of Webb, Iowa; her brothers Timothy Fogarty of Kimball, and Joseph Fogarty of Lester Prairie.
Alice is survived by her husband, four children and their spouses Donald Martin of Platteville, Colo., James Martin IV of Chesapeake, VA.; Beth Erickson of Mesa, and Kelleen Meister of Mesa; her eight grandchildren Tyler Martin, Adam Erickson, Alyson Erickson, Kaitlin Meister, James Martin V, Brooklyn Meister, Rachel Martin, and Cassandra Hedger.; her three sisters Teresa Sephas of Dickens, Iowa, Donna Finneman of Otsego, Minn., and Bernadette Nelson of Watkins; and four brothers Patrick of Parkville, Mo., James of Pequot Lakes, Thomas of Park Rapids, and Daniel of Howard Lake; and numerous nieces and nephews.
