Mia L. Nistler was born Oct. 19, 1943, to Milt and Lu Brundin in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, where Milt was working to help build the Alaska Highway. Her family moved to Anchorage in 1951, and then to Fairbanks, where Mia graduated from Lathrop High School in 1961. After several years of working, attending college, and trying her wings as a singer in Tacoma, California, and Hawaii, she moved back to Anchorage in 1965. She worked for the municipality for 43 years. Most of her career was with the Solid Waste Utility, where she was affectionately called the “garbage queen.” She received this title from a local DJ, who interviewed her many times during her 42 years of involvement in the Anchorage Spring Clean-up. In 2008, she was honored by the Anchorage Chamber of Commerce as the Gold Pan recipient for individual volunteer of the year. Mia retired from the Municipality in October of 2009.

In 1968, Mia married and lived happily for 44 years with her best friend and husband Bob Nistler. After her retirement, she was able to attend and participate in volunteering for different ministries at St. Anthony’s Church, travel, play golf, and complete projects around their home. She was a member of the American Legion, AMVETS, and VFW auxiliaries.

Mia was preceded in death by her husband Bob, Oct. 16, 2012; her parents; and her brother Brian Brundin.

She is survived by her son Robert Nistler Jr.; two brothers Jan (and Kathy) Brundin, and Kip Brundin; sister-in-law Lucille Asfeld of Watkins; brother-in-law David (and Barbara) Nistler of Oklahoma; numerous nieces and nephews; and many life-long friends, especially Susie Williams and Tillie Gray, whom she loved and cherished.
