Pierz edges Lady Cubs (basketball)


W-978-Paiten-Schreiner-kimball-at-PierzKimball traveled to Pierz Thursday, Feb. 21, in CMC play with third-place in the CMC on the line. Pierz defeated the Cubs 67-62 in overtime earlier this year, as the Cubs looked to even the score. Kimball started a little sluggishly, as the Pioneers began the contest with a 9-2 run, but Kimball worked their way back into the game trailing by two at halftime 20-18. In the second half, Kimball managed to take the lead on a three-point basket by Senior Paiten Schreiner 35-34, but Kimball could not get the critical shots to fall down the stretch, as Pierz finished on the winning side by a final score of 43-38.

Defensively, the Cubs held their own lead by Raelynn Callander with 4 steals and Breane Meierhofer with 3 steals. Madelyn O’Brien played strong defense in the paint, blocking five Pierz shots. The Cubs waivered on offense, committing 23 turnovers and shooting 14 for 49 from the field. Scoring leaders for Kimball were Casie Mackereth 11, Schreiner 9, Meierhofer 8, Kaylee Petty 6, Allie Seth 4. Rebounding leaders were Meierhofer with seven, Casie Mackereth six, Schreiner five, and Seth four. Kenadi Mackereth led the team with six assists. The Cubs’ record stands at 10-13 overall, and 6-8 in the CMC. Kimball will play its first game of the section 5AA playoffs Thursday, Feb. 28, in Foley. Foley is the four seed and Kimball the five seed. Start time is scheduled for 7 p.m. Go Big Blue!
