Cubs fall to Lakers

The Kimball Cubs traveled to Howard Lake last Tuesday, Feb. 26, to take on the Howard Lake-Waverly-Winsted Lakers. The game started out close, as the Cubs pounded the ball inside against the Lakers. Kimball was down one (8-9) with 11:47 remaining in the half. HL-W-W then went on a run to increase their lead to 17 at the half (37-20).

The Cubs tried changing zone defenses in the second half to see if it would be more effective in slowing down the Lakers. HL-W-W proceeded to hit eight three-pointers after the break to increase their lead. The Lakers won by a 71-43 score.

Austin Roerick and Joey VonWahlde led the Cubs in scoring with 10 points each. Roerick also added 12 rebounds. Cameron Hunt had five assists and three steals. The Cubs record now stands at 11-12 on the season and 5-8 in conference.

Cubs give Jaguars first-half scare

The Cubs traveled to Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa to take on the Jaguars last Friday night in a make-up game from January. Playing short-handed, Kimball started out great against the number two-ranked team in state. The Cubs led for the first 10 minutes of the game. B-B-E finally tied the score at 17 with 7:04 left in the half. Kimball stayed close, and trailed by only three, 30-33, at the break.

In the second half, poor shooting and turnovers hurt the Cubs. Kimball shot only 20 percent (4/20) from the field after intermission.  The Cubs also committed nine second-half turnovers. After a great effort, the Cubs fell by a 66-47 score.

Connor Wittenberg and Preston Peglow led the Cubs in scoring with 16 and 15 points respectively. Wittenberg also added six rebounds. Mathias Hennen handed out three assists and Cameron Hunt and Preston Peglow each had three steals. The Cubs finished the regular season with an 11-13 overall record, and a 5-9 conference record, good for a fifth-place finish in the CMC Conference. Kimball will travel to Rockford on Thursday night, March 7, to take on the Rockets in the first round of tournament play.
