Cubs finish as Runner-up for Section (wrestling)

The Cubs started their section tournament this last week with a quarter-final win over the Eagles of Eden Valley-Watkins. The Eagles advanced into the quarterfinal match with a 33-21 victory over Browerville, but with the Eagles’ win came four forfeits. In the section tournament, if you forfeit a weight, you need to carry that forfeit all the way through the tournament. The Eagles came to wrestle a tough match, but the Cubs proved to be too much for them, and came away with a 48-29 victory to advance to the semi-finals Friday, Feb. 15, in Belgrade where they would face the host school.

Cubs boys’ basketball v Rockford and HL-W-W

The Kimball Cubs traveled to Rockford last Tuesday night,
Jan. 22, to take on the Rockets. It was a slow start for Kimball falling behind early by having difficulty with Rockford’s zone defense. The Cubs shot the ball poorly in the half (10/29) and trailed by 38-26 at the break.

Becky Holtz and Abbey Straley led the team with 17 and 8 points. Madison Libbesmeier and Ericka Johnson chipped in 3 points each. Taylor Schreiner, Lauren Libbesmeier, Amanda Roerick and Kaitlyn Truenow rounded out the scoring with 2, 2, 2 and 1, respectively.Cubs take down Royals

The Cubs traveled to Royalton to take on the host school Thursday, Jan. 10. The match had five lead changes, and came down to a fall at heavy weight from Tim Konz for the Cubs, to come out victorious. The Cubs had some new kids in the line-up that helped get the victory, Joseph Donnay stepped in at 113 in order to give the Cubs some flexibility with their line-up, and Alec Johnson stepped in at 120, to accept a forfeit. scored a fall in 3:47 over Matt Neu, to give the Cubs their first lead of the night. Marcus Hamer (145) scored another fall for the Cubs in 1:52 over Ty Held. Markus Mehr won by a decision 5-3 over Shawn Urbanski, to give the Cubs their second lead of the night.
Travis Wills and Austyn Schlueter accepted forfeits on the night, and gave the Cubs the lead again for the third time. Then Tim Konz gave the Cubs their fourth and final lead at heavyweight with a 3:40 fall over Tony Gadacz. The Cubs won the dual with a
39-37 score.
Next, the Cubs will host Holdingford on Thursday Jan. 17. JV will start at 6:30 p.m. followed by parents’ night and Varsity will start no sooner than 7 p.m.

Lakers’ outside shooting dooms Cubs

The Howard Lake-Waverly-Winsted Lakers girls’ basketball team visited Kimball Thursday, Jan. 10. This conference matchup would feature the 4-0 Lakers and 3-1 Cubs (conference records), as Kimball had hopes of pulling themselves into a second-place tie in the conference with the Lakers. Each team made some nice runs in the early minutes of the first half with senior guard Raelynn Callander hitting a free-throw, giving Kimball a 12-11 lead, with eight and a half minutes to play in the frame.
