In order to recognize achievement, outstanding progress, and responsible behavior in our student body, grade-level teams made up of teachers select one Kimball Area High School student in each grade to be recognized as the Student of the Month. The monthly winners are recognized in school, on the school website, and in the Tri-County News. They also receive a Dairy Queen gift certificate and Chamber Bucks from the Kimball Area Chamber of Commerce. Special thanks to Annandale’s Dairy Queen and the Kimball Chamber of Commerce for sponsoring this program. The following students are recognized for January 2014:
Grade 7–Casey Gohmann
Casey Gohmann was selected as the January student of the month. Casey is a polite and personable young man who will often offer a greeting as he walks past. Striving to be the best that he can be is another attribute we appreciate about Casey. He listens to instructions carefully and then works hard to follow them.
The Kimball student organizations and clubs, KAHS Student Government, KES Student government, FFA, National Honor Society, Building Leadership Together Leo Club, Kimball Letter winners, Knowledge Bowl, The seventh grade, and Speech and One Act Club, have banned together to address the world issue of hunger. Did you know… that one child dies every 5 seconds from hunger related causes… or that hunger and malnutrition kills more people than AIDS, malaria, and tuberculosis combined.
“In Flanders fields the poppies grow between the crosses, row on row, that mark our place...” Veterans will recognize the opening words of this poem, often read at Memorial Day observances and at services for fallen soldiers.
Written in 1915 by Canadian officer Lt. Col. John McCrae, it commemorated the death of a friend and fellow soldier. Based on this poem, playwright Kimberly Zach created a one-act play showing the sacrifices of ordinary people in wartime, both at home and on the front. Kimball Area High School students performed “In Flanders Fields” for subsection competition Saturday, Jan. 25, and were awarded second-place trophy, medals, and a place in the Section 5A One Act competition Saturday, Feb. 8. Kimball will perform at 10:45 a.m. at Sauk Centre High School. The section 5A first place cast and crew will advance to the MSHSL state one act festival Thursday and Friday, Feb. 13 and 14.
February is I Love to Read month! This year our slogan is ‘Reading for the Love of it!’ Throughout the four weeks of February we have various activities for each class, grade, and the whole school to participate in that pertain to reading. Please note that every Friday will be a different dress up day for students to show their love of reading.
Week 1 Feb. 3-7
• Proclamation signing with Tammy/Newspaper for Community Readers
• Each classroom decides on their favorite book and decorates their door to represent the book. Teachers can decide when it best fits into their schedule to take their class around to view all the doors.
• Friday, Feb. 7 – Crazy Sock Day
