Hilltop Health Care Center and Kimball Elementary School’s Intergenerational Program
Hilltop Health Care Center residents and the Kimball Elementary School’s fifth-grade class have been meeting for approximately 15 years for an intergenerational program. Each fifth-grade class comes to Hilltop Health Care Center weekly to meet with the residents for a five-week period. The residents and students are paired up together.
Kimball Speechers had a good Saturday, April 13. With a narrow window of good (although not quite springy) weather, the Section
5A tournament went off with nary a hitch. And for Kimball speechers, it went … well, GREAT!
To begin with, the team placed third out of 20 competing teams, only 2 points out of a runner-up trophy, which Sauk Centre took home. This is the highest sections placing Kimball has had in many years. St. Cloud Cathedral are the 2013 5A Section Champions. Team points at sections are counted only for those competing in finals.
On a list of 1,281 top math and science high school teams in the country, one would hardly expect to see a small rural public school.
But, there it is on the list: Kimball Area High School. They were one of 24 teams from Minnesota in this predominantly East-Coast contest.
The Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics announced its annual Moody’s Mega Math competition and, this year, four KAHS seniors decided to take on the challenge. After all, there was no entry fee; the only cost would be 14 hours of their time, a whole Sunday as it turned out.
