Two Meeker County 4-H youth participate in Dan Patch award competition

Since 1966, one member of the Minnesota 4-H horse project has been awarded the Dan Patch Award. This award is based on the individual’ s overall achievement, leadership, and service. The winner receives a plaque bearing a picture of the famous W-Tori-Barkapacer, Dan Patch, who set the world pacing record for the mile of 1:55 Sept. 8, 1906, at the Minnesota State Fair. To apply for this award, youth complete a résumé, portfolio, and all chosen finalists give a presentation. Recipients and finalists will be recognized at the Minnesota State 4-H Horse, which will be held Sept. 12-15, 2014. The Dan Patch award focuses on youth in 10th grade through one year past 12th grade at the start of the contest year. Sixth through ninth-graders compete for Youth Leadership Trips.

4-H Fashion Revue July 15

The 2014 Meeker County 4-H Public Fashion Revue will be held at 7 p.m. Tuesday, July 15, at Zion Lutheran Church in Litchfield. This event has been planned by the families of those who will be participating. Thanks to all of you who will be helping out. The theme for this event is “Flash From the Past (’80s theme)”. Please join us for an exciting, fun-filled evening. Fashion Revue judging winners will be awarded following the review.

Region officers provided with premier training for year of service ahead

Sixty-four region officers from eight different regions across Minnesota all traveled to Hackensack, Minn., Tuesday, June 10, to attend Providing Officers With EssentialW-FFA-Region-5-Officer-Team-14 Resources, or POWER, leadership training. Officers from Region Five included Sienna Kampsen–New London-Spicer, Sarah Eggert–Hutchinson, Kirsten Barott–Glencoe/Silver Lake, Garrett Moorse–Minneota, Kayla Kutzke–ACGC, Zach Pierson–Glencoe/Silver Lake, James Gathje–Eden Valley-Watkins, Emily Amundson–Dassel Cokato, and Joelle Edwards–Kimball.

St. John’s Prep announces spring 2014 Honor Roll students

St. John’s Preparatory School is pleased to announce the following Kimball and South Haven students in grades 6-12 have achieved the Honor Roll for Spring Semester, 2014. Students attaining the Headmaster’s Honor Roll have earned a grade-point average of 3.50 or higher and those on the Principal’s Honor Roll have a grade point average of 3.0 to 3.4999.

Anderson becomes area's newest Eagle Scour

Caleb Anderson of Pearl Lake became the newest Eagle Scout in the area during an Honor Court ceremony Saturday afternoon at Holy Cross School. Pictured above is Caleb (center) his W-IMG 9423proud parents Julie and Ralph Anderson.

Caleb’s Eagle Scout project was to install a pavered patio to the west of the church overlooking the cemetery (below left), and a Mary garden on the east side (below right). He enlisted donations and helpers, and coordinated both projects to their completion. Anderson is part of Troop 15 out of Cold Spring.Staff photos by Jean Doran Matua.
