Fertilizer reduction project



Targeted fertilizer application reduction project off to great start

The Clearwater River Watershed District's (CRWD) Targeted Fertilizer Application Reduction Project has begun in earnest. The project is funded in part by the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency through a grant from the United States Environmental Protection Agency, Section 319 Nonpoint Source Management Fund. The local funding for this project is being provided by the CRWD through the Clearwater River Chain of Lakes Restoration Project.

A little inspiration went a long way.

Finding the book, Earth from Above by Yann Arthus-Bertrand, on the donation cart at her local library, fiber artist Caron Lage was intrigued by the beautiful aerial photos. Many have a similar rhythm to the quilts that Lage and other quilters/artists employ in their work.

Budgeting for the holidays: Smart spending for the season



The countdown to the holiday season has officially begun with decorations on store shelves and gift catalogs filling mailboxes. A recent study by the Consumer Electronics Association shows that individual consumers plan to spend $1,634 overall this holiday, up 11 percent from last year. Unfortunately, much of that spending will be done on credit cards. That may make consumers feel gloomy when they get their bills in January.

America's farmers can support local school district with $2,500 donation



$160,000 invested toward education in Minn. through the Monsanto Fund

Elementary and high schools in 26 states currently receive less state funding in the 2012-13 school year in comparison to last year's numbers. In 35 states, school funding now stands below 2008 levels, according to the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities. But thanks to the generosity of farmers through America's Farmers Grow CommunitiesSM, $555,000 was donated to schools nationwide in 2012.
