Playground is community effort

On June 13, 2013, the Wat-Kim-Valley V.F.W. donated $12,000 to the City of Watkins for playground equipment in the relatively new housing development on the northeast side of Watkins, the Faber Addition. w-WatkinsPlayground-IMG 0813 Purchase of the equipment from Midwest Playscapes in Chaska was approved by the Watkins council at its Oct. 10, 2013, meeting. The equipment was purchased in January, and Saturday, July 12, a pack of volunteers came out on a drizzly morning to set it all up.

Because of their donation, the half-acre park will be called “V.F.W. Park.”

Total cost was to be $16,756 + $1,135 for installation, and $1,520 for engineered wood fiber safety surfacing.

More than a dozen volunteers started at 7 a.m. Saturday, July 12, to assemble and install the new equipment in the playground in the Faber Addition (on the northeast side of Watkins). The new “V.F.W. Park” was so designated after the Wat-Kim-Valley V.F.W. donated the money to purchase the playground equipment. Staff photo by Jean Doran Matua.
