On Friday, May 10, and Saturday, May 11, the red crepe paper poppy will be offered to the public by the American Legion Auxiliary.
This reminder of the sacrifice of countless thousands in four wars is an annual event undertaken by the members of Unit #261 in Kimball.
Volunteers from the Unit will once again take part in this nation-wide program in memory of the citizen soldiers who gave their lives in the cause of freedom.
Funds collected on Poppy Days are used to assist the needy veteran and his family. It is a self-help program as the Auxiliary’s familiar red paper poppy is hand-made by disabled and hospitalized veterans. These disabled and hospitalized veterans make the flowers by hand, petal by petal. It is part of a physical and psychological therapy program by veterans for veterans. These poppies are purchased by the Auxiliary and offered to the public, not at a price, but for a contribution … a few cents to say America remembers.

Annual Mail Carrier Food Drive May 11 will feed thousands
WASHINGTON-The National Association of Letter Carriers (NALC) will conduct its 21st annual food drive to combat hunger on Saturday, May 11. Letter carriers will collect non-perishable food donations on that day as they deliver mail along their postal routes - allowing postal patrons to literally donate to their hungry neighbors while still wearing their pajamas.
Hilltop Health Care Center hosted a lunch Wednesday, April 24, at Wally’s Café in Watkins to celebrate their 55 senior volunteers. This corps of individuals serve a number of roles at the residential facility, and they put in around 2,500 volunteer hours in the past year (the equivalent of a full-time employee). Susan Schneider is the volunteer coordinator, and she oversees these senior volunteers as well as junior volunteers who are school-age.
Volunteers come from much the same communities as do residents. Many are from the immediate Watkins area, but some come from farther away. Thank you to all who volunteer!
