Annual Mail Carrier Food Drive May 11 will feed thousands
WASHINGTON-The National Association of Letter Carriers (NALC) will conduct its 21st annual food drive to combat hunger on Saturday, May 11. Letter carriers will collect non-perishable food donations on that day as they deliver mail along their postal routes - allowing postal patrons to literally donate to their hungry neighbors while still wearing their pajamas.
Hilltop Health Care Center hosted a lunch Wednesday, April 24, at Wally’s Café in Watkins to celebrate their 55 senior volunteers. This corps of individuals serve a number of roles at the residential facility, and they put in around 2,500 volunteer hours in the past year (the equivalent of a full-time employee). Susan Schneider is the volunteer coordinator, and she oversees these senior volunteers as well as junior volunteers who are school-age.
Volunteers come from much the same communities as do residents. Many are from the immediate Watkins area, but some come from farther away. Thank you to all who volunteer!

On April 17, 1952, President Harry Truman signed a bill proclaiming the National Day of Prayer into law in the United States. President Reagan amended the law in 1988, designating the first Thursday of May each year as the National Day of Prayer.
