EV-W baseball team halted at Holdingford

Fresh off a convincing 13-5 victory over Royalton, the Eden Valley-Watkins baseball boys headed to Holdingford Tuesday, April 22, and dropped a close one, 4-3. The Eagles had a tough time getting started, but finally rallied for three runs in the top of the seventh inning, knotting the game. But in the bottom of the seventh, the Huskers’ Jeremy Springer and Jake Nelson reached on errors. Mitch Merten was hit by a pitch, loading the bases. After Mitch Messman struck out looking, Jordan Gombos was hit by a pitch, forcing in the winning run.  “After we scored three in the top of the seventh, then loaded the bases with two out, we just couldn’t come up with a timely hit. It was a well-played game with Austin Schlangen and Holdingford’s
J. Nelson locked into a 1-0 pitcher’s duel through the sixth. Holdingford was a good test to see where we are at, and hope to see continued improvement,” EV-W coach Mike Tomsche said.

EV-W softball team wins season opener at Upsala

The weather woes were well worth the wait for the lady Eagles, as they hammered out 13 hits en route to a 16-10 victory in Upsala Thursday, April 10. EV-W had the bats working overtime, scoring runs in six of the seven innings. Coach Dave Dziengel was pleased to get back at it. “It was nice to finally get a game in, and we are actually playing 19 days earlier than last season.” Senior Jamie Scherer was credited with the win. “Jamie did an OK job pitching. She got a little tired in the sixth and the Cardinals did a nice job rallying, to make the score 14-10. We added two runs in the seventh and held on for our first win of the season,” Dziengel said. The Eagles are a talented, enthusiastic bunch with plenty of new faces. “With five new starters, I was happy how we swung the bats and how well we did running the bases. We will need to continue to improve with games next week against a good Browerville team and our first game against a very athletic Pierz team,” added coach Dziengel.

EV-W box score: Jamie Scherer, 2 for 6, 2 runs scored, 2 RBI; Brook Stang, 2 for 4, run scored, 2 RBI; Faith Forcier, 0 for 4, 2 runs scored; Mindy Forcier, 2 for 2, 4 runs scored, RBI; Kali Covert, 3 for 5, run scored, 3 RBI; Breanna Stang, 2 for 5, run scored, RBI; Sarah Pauly, 0 for 2, 3 runs scored; Bobbi Jo Block, 1 for 2, run scored, RBI; Ashley Anderson, 1 for 4, run scored, RBI.
