UPDATE: Section final game is at 1 p.m. Thursday, May 30 (not 5 p.m.)

The 2013 Eden Valley-Watkins softball team defeated ACGC May 24 (6-5) to take the Section 5A West Championship. They faced Isle, the 5A East Champs, Tuesday afternoon, May 28, soundly defeating them 16-1 in five innings. The will next play either Osakis or Rush City at 5 p.m. Thursday, May 30, at Whitney Park Field. Team seniors are Baylee Lahr, Mickael Lies, Holly Schumacher, Briana Plantenberg, Kaylee Forcier, and Tina Streit. Juniors are Jamie Scherer, Lexi Klatt, and Ashley Huschle. Underclasswomen are Breanna Stang, Faith Forcier, Brook Stang, Mindy Forcier, Sarah Pauly, and Kali Covert. Congratulations, girls, on a great season (albeit a short and fast one)!

The Eden Valley-Watkins baseball team dropped a double-dipper Friday, May 17, at Howard Lake, 5-4 and 9-0. Eagles’ coach Mike Tomsche is well aware of the problem areas. “We committed three errors in game one, that played a big role in our 5-4 loss. If we make those plays we win; plain and simple.” The Eagles’ problems seem to be mostly centered on the basics and they are costly. “In game two, errors and walks were our downfall. We need to make the plays behind our pitchers and get our bats going. We are not doing the little things to win close ball games.” Tomsche said.

The Eden Valley-Watkins baseball team lost one and won one last Monday, May 13, at home, in a conference battle twin bill with Holdingford, 7-0 and 3-0. Eagles’ coach Mike Tomsche is pleased with the performance. “Game one, we committed a couple of errors that hurt us. The game was closer than reflected by the score. Austin Berg threw a great second game, allowing only a single and earned the shut out. We are playing better baseball and the return of senior Alex Geislinger to our line-up will help.”

EV-W-K track teams gain more respect at Pierz meet

The Eden Valley-Watkins-Kimball boys’ and girls’ track teams flexed their muscles Tuesday, at the Central Minnesota Conference Track and Field Championships in Pierz. The contest consisted of 7 women’s teams and 7 men’s teams, each vying for top positions in 18 events. EV-W-K ladies’ coach Gordy Schlangen is satisfied with the girls’ efforts. “The girls fought very hard and finished third behind two very strong teams in Maple Lake and Holdingford. We continue to improve as we get ready for subsections next week. I am very proud of how they performed individually, and as a team.”
