The match featured more opens than a revolving door, as the Eagles managed just two individual victories. In the 126-pound division, Hunter Mathies scored a PIN over the Royals’ Joe Jensen, and 160-pound Cain Renner captured an 8-1 decision over Brad Kroll.
Stars’ senior goalie Ellary Sweep, swept the crease clean all night, as the River Lakes’ girls claimed a 4-0 shutout over Brainerd/Little Falls. After an eight-day weather-assisted respite, the Eden Valley-Watkins girls’ basketball team welcomed Holdingford to the friendly confines on Tuesday, Jan. 21, for a Central Minnesota Conference shootout. The Huskers handed the home-towners a 62-56 loss, which also included their first conference blemish. Rebounding from the Tuesday night disappointment, the Lady Eagles jumped back onto the winning track, beating Maple Lake, 71-50, Friday, Jan. 24, at Johnson-Peterson.
The Eden Valley-Watkins boys’ basketball team hosted Rockford Thursday, Jan. 23, and cruised to a 65-52 Central Minnesota Conference win. Junior guard Bret Mattice led the onslaught with 27 points and teammate Jared Streit posted 15 points and 19 rebounds for the Eagles, who now stand at 4-4 in the conference and 10-6 overall. EV-W built a 16-point halftime advantage and never looked back. “We came out with a lot of energy last night. We were led by Bret Mattice’s 27 points and Jared Steit’s 14 points, 19 rebounds. Our goal was to slow the pace of the game down to keep them from running, and we did just that to win the game,” said a pleased EV-W coach Adam Langer.
