EV-W wrestlers split duel match v Rockford, Pierz

Fresh off capturing the Norwood/Young America Invitational championship, the Eagles grapplers were back at it Tuesday night, Jan. 8, when they traveled to Pierz, for a duel match with the Rockford Rockets and the Pierz Pioneers. Eden Valley-Watkins came out strong, taking the Rockford match, 66-12. But Act II of the matinee proved too much for the Eagles, as they dropped the Pierz contest, 51-19. EV-W Coach Dan Berg thought the guys had a decent night overall. “Well, Rockford gave up seven forfeits, and overall, against Pierz, we did alright.” Wins by pins for EV-W v Rockford, were Donavin McCann at 132 lbs., Cain Renner at 145 lbs., Luke Kuechle at 170 lbs., and Matt Unterberger at 220 lbs. Seven other weight-class divisions were won by forfeit.

Eagle grapplers take 2 in dual with Rocori, Paynesville

It was a pretty good couple of days for the Eden Valley-Watkins wrestlers, as they defeated the Rocori Spartans and Paynesville Bulldogs in a dual meet Thursday night, Jan. 10, after having split a dual match with Rockford and Pierz on Tuesday, Jan. 8; capping off an impressive 3-1 record for the week. The early contest featured a Rocori Spartans showdown, with the Eagles taking a 40-33 victory. In the eight o’clock session versus the Paynesville Bulldogs, EV-W hung on and prevailed, 36-32. “It is always nice to get two wins, but I think we can do better as a whole,” said Eagles Coach Dan Berg. The Eagles came out strong in the opener with Rocori. “We wrestled Rocori first and did a good job. I thought our energy level was a little down, but you can’t complain about wins,” said Berg. Blonigen, Renner, Peterson and Miller each earned pins. Schindler, Mathies, Salzl, Kuechle, Hoffman, were also victorious in their matches.

EV-W basketball boys start new year

Lose to KAHS
Following an overtime victory against Holdingford at the
St. John’s Prep Holiday Tournament, the EV-W Eagles fell short last Thursday night, Jan. 3, at home, to the Kimball Area Cubs, 58-46.

The contest couldn’t have been any tighter, as the clock at the half-time buzzer revealed a 19-19 tie. But to EV-W’s chagrin, the Cubs would trump the Eagles second-half tally of 27 with 39 of their own. Senior guard Brent Stenger led the Eagles with 14. Sophomore forward Jared Streit managed 12; Kirby Knutson, senior forward, finished with 8; and sophomore guard Bret Mattice had 7.

The Eagles travel to Howard Lake-Waverly-Winsted Tuesday, Jan. 8, and host Maple Lake Friday, Jan. 11.

Tuesday, Jan. 8, at Howard Lake-Waverly-Winsted; and hosted the Maple Lake Irish, on Friday, Jan. 11. The game v Howard Lake-Waverly-Winsted was exciting to the very end. Down by seven points at the half, the Eagles outscored the Lakers the rest of the way, but it wasn’t enough, as they fell, 56-53.

Seventh-grade Cubs girls’ basketball

End season 12-0, CMC Tournament Champions

The seventh-grade Kimball Cubs girls’ basketball team wrapped up their season Tuesday, Dec. 18, with a win over visiting Howard Lake by a score of 39-27. The win capped off a perfect 12-0 season for the team. Along the way, the Cubs were also able to capture the CMC Junior High Tournament Championship by defeating Pierz in game 1, by a score of 32-16. Howard Lake in game 2, by a score of 34-31 and Maple Lake 41-36, in the championship game. The team worked hard each night at practice and was willing to go the extra mile in games by out-hustling their opponents and working as a team defensively. This makes for a great combination and will serve them well as they move forward with their careers. The team showed that they had spent time in the gym shooting the basketball. Their ability to put the ball in the hoop consistently each night, playing with good defensive pressure and rebounding were major keys to victory.

I would like to thank the team for their effort and hard work.

The team and I would like to thank everyone for their support at our games.

It takes a lot of effort from everyone to be successful.
