Eden Valley-Watkins softball team splits double-header at Rockford

Holly Schumacher blasted a 3-run round-tripper last Tuesday, May 7, in Rockford, to help seal the EV-W Eagles’ first of two games victory, 6-3. Eagle coach Dave Dziengel was impressed with the team’s effort. “Jamie Scherer did a fabulous job, picking up her first varsity win tonight. She held Rockford scoreless, giving up just 6 hits over 4 innings of work. Equally as impressive was Baylee Lahr’s performance, as she worked a quick two innings to secure the win. The big blow for us offensively tonight was Holly Schumacher’s 3-run homerun in the third inning.”
The Rockets turned the tables on the Eagles in game two, taking the contest in a shutout win, 4-0. The Eagles managed just 3 hits, while Rockford pounded out 10. “Rockford scored 3 quick runs in the first inning and didn’t look back in this game. We could only muster three hits off their starting pitcher and we just couldn’t get anything going offensively,” said Dziengel. EV-W’s overall record is 4-3 and 3-3 in conference play.
EV-W softball team takes two at Pierz

Making the journey to Pierz Monday, May 6, was well worth it for the Eden Valley-Watkins softball team, as they swept a double-dipper from the Pioneers, 7-0 and 10-3. Coach Dave Dziengel was happy with the girls’ performance. “We combined 6 hits with 7 walks to come out ahead in game one. Baylee Lahr did a nice job of keeping the Pierz hitters off balance, effectively throwing her change up as she collected 4 strikeouts without giving up a walk.”
The EV-W gals kept their foot on the pedal, racking up 10 runs in the second game and making the day’s total, 17-3. “The bats came alive as we collected 11 hits in game two. Brook Stang hit a 2-run homerun and had 4 RBI for the day. We played error-free ball during both games. Baylee Lahr again collected 4 strikeouts without giving up a walk. Ashley Huschle was 3 for 3, scoring 2 runs,” Dziengel said.

Let’s Play Five! That’s what the Eden Valley-Watkins softball team will do this opening week, as they gear up for the weather-dictated, reshuffled schedule. Coach Dave Dziengel was happy to finally get the season under way. “After a long season indoors, it was nice to get out and play an actual game. Baylee Lahr was a little wild but got the job done, pitching an effective game and limiting Osakis to 2 runs and scattering just 6 hits.” Opening the season Monday, the Eagles, behind senior Holly Schumacher’s 2-home run-5 RBI effort, captured the 8-2 non-conference victory over the Osakis Silverstreaks. Schumacher connected on a three-run shot in the bottom of the fourth inning, extending EV-W’s lead to 6-1. She added a two-run homer in the sixth, and teammate Jamie Scherer doubled twice and scored three runs for the Eagles.

The Eden Valley-Watkins baseball team lost a double-dipper to the Maple Lake Irish Thursday, May 2; 10-0 and 8-1. Maple Lake hitters jumped out of the dugout and swiped a 4-0 first-inning lead. En-route to the rainbow’s end, the Irish found gold as they rallied for six more runs in the third, behind Dustin Strub’s perfect 3 for 3 efforts. The ambush culminated in a 10-hit 10-run massacre by Maple Lake in game one. Landon Caughey picked up the win, allowing just three hits, while fanning six. Eagles coach Mike Tomsche is optimistic and realistic. “It was a tough night. We are playing hard but not playing at the level we need to. We were short on pitching last night which didn’t help either. Our goal is to keep playing hard, improve each week and hopefully pick up some wins in our upcoming games.” The Eagles managed just three hits, sending a mere 19 hitters to the plate.

Each placing second in the Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa Lions 7-team invitational track meet Tuesday night, April 30, the Eden Valley-Watkins-Kimball boys’ and girls’ track 
teams are starting the new season on the right “feet”. The athletes took to the great outdoors and the competition in Belgrade was exciting. Boys’ coach Jason Mortenson is very pleased with the squad’s improvement. “Our relays are starting to take shape and our individuals are pretty much in place. Right now we are working on our depth and trying to find strong second and third participants in events, to help our team score, as we head to our CMC meet in two weeks. Maple Lake is incredibly tough, but we are going to get as tough as we can to compete with them and see what happens.” The relay teams consist of Austin Marx, DJ Stewart, Brandon Faber and Shadly Callahan in the 4x800; Tommy Lochen, Torey Rohloff, Cole Denn and Deshaun James in the 4x200; Alex Shoenwetter, Torey Rohloff, Cole Denn and John Salzl in the 4x100; and Shadley Callahan, Austin Marx, Torey Rohloff and Austin Pelkey in the 4x400.
