Fishing opener is on; planning and caution urged

Ice or no ice, Minnesota’s walleye and northern pike fishing opener is Saturday, May 11.
Anglers who have traditionally headed north for the first weekend of the season should check ice conditions and the availability of public water accesses and roads leading to them. Good sources of information are bait shops, resorts and the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources’ (DNR) area offices at www.mndnr.gov/contact/locator.html.
South Haven Fire and Rescue donates ambulance

The South Haven Fire and Rescue Department donated an ambulance from their fleet of fire and rescue vehicles to Northland Community & Technical College. The ambulance was donated and will be used as a training aid for Northland’s Intensive Care Paramedic (ICP) and Emergency Medical Services (EMS) programs.
The 1999 Ford Ambulance from South Haven Fire and Rescue was donated March 27, and recently arrived at Northland’s East Grand Forks, campus. The South Haven Fire and Rescue Department is an all-volunteer group, comprised of 25 individuals from the area. They donated the ambulance to Northland to ensure it would be utilized as a valuable training aid. “The ambulance was donated to us when we started our rescue program and we thought it should be donated again,” stated Fire Chief Oscar Laney.
Sixth annual Old Glory Run May 18

The 18,000 member Minnesota Disabled American Veteran (DAV) organization is once again announcing plans for the sixth annual Old Glory Run in Cold Spring scheduled for May 18.
This event was first organized by local Cold Spring/St. Cloud area volunteers Curt and Pam Karls in 2007. They have continued organizing and coordinating the event and have played a significant role in providing funds raised through this event to the Minn. Disabled American Veterans organization. Minnesota State DAV Commander Bob Erickson recently stated “Curt and Pam Karls have become heroes to the veterans we serve in this Central Minnesota community. One of our primary programs here is providing free transportation for veterans who need transportation to and from their medical appointments at the St. Cloud VA medical center as a part of the VA/DAV transportation program. We have purchased three new Ford vans driven by DAV volunteers to transport these veterans … and as a result of Curt and Pams generosity and gift of time and talents, we have many area veterans enjoying a better quality of life”.

Annual Mail Carrier Food Drive May 11 will feed thousands
WASHINGTON-The National Association of Letter Carriers (NALC) will conduct its 21st annual food drive to combat hunger on Saturday, May 11. Letter carriers will collect non-perishable food donations on that day as they deliver mail along their postal routes - allowing postal patrons to literally donate to their hungry neighbors while still wearing their pajamas.
Wright County Swappers Meet is open

As a sure sign of spring, the Wright County Swappers Meet near South Haven opened Saturday, 
April 27, two weeks later than planned because of snow that just wouldn't go away. Within the past week, school spring sports have started outdoor play at long last, local amateur baseball play began, and the Kimball Golf Club opened to the public, even with patches of snow remaining on some of the hills.
