EV-W Classroom of the Week: Mrs. Huberty's 2nd Grade
There are 21 in our class.
Second grade is an exciting year! We review many skills learned in first grade, build on them, and add new skills. We are introduced to multiplication and division in math. In reading, we read more challenging stories, and write stories for different purposes.
Mrs. Huberty teaches skills for growing. We learn about community, positive decision-making, and saying "no" to negative influences.
In May, we go on a field trip to St. Cloud. We will tour Cash Wise and Stearns History Museum. We also will see the play "Ramona Quimby" on May 3.
For the 100th day of school, second grade does a service project. The students donate toiletry items to Anna Marie's Women's Shelter. Our goal is to collect 100 items, but we always exceed our goal.
Our class is special because we have many different personalities, but we all get along!

EV-W Elementary Concert, Dec. 3
The Eden Valley-Watkins Elementary School Winter Music Program presented “A Night of American Folk Music Monday evening, Dec. 3, at the EV-W H.S. gym. Here, Kim Salo directs the sixth-grade band.
The fourth-grade music classes played recorders and sang a variety of numbers. Kathy Pauls is the choir director.
Fifth- and sixth-graders sang several pieces, ending with “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer,” the first song ever broadcast from outer space. Both Salo and Pauls worked with these students weekly.
Fifth- and sixth-grade choirs sang two pieces from their Veterans Day program. The signs they hold spell out “Thank you veterans.”

Anti-bullying skits at EV-W
Eddie, EV-W’s eagle mascot, recently played a starring role in the effort to end bullying behaviors. “What Would Eddie Do?” was the theme behind three skits presented at the EV-W elementary by a group of high school drama students. The skits were part of the Anti-Bullying Week at the elementary school during American Education Week.The principles of “Talk, Walk and Tell” were incorporated into the skits.
High school students taking part in the skits included Annie Benson, Justin Vannurden, Nick Block, Heidi Geislinger, Dyani Acosta, Kaitlyn Gruber, Jack Bates, Maggie Schmaltz, Tawner Cleland-Schmitz, and Fentke Stolle.

Classroom of the week: EV-W Mrs. Nathan's 1st Grade
There are 22 students in our class.
In second grade we learn many new things. We learn how to make change, add two-digit numbers, subtract, and by the end of the year we'll know how to do basic multiplication. We also learn how to become good readers and ask questions about our world in science. In second grade we work on being kind to others and how to be a good friend.
Our class field trip this year will be going to the play "Ramona Quimby" at St. John's University in May .
Our class is special because we all bring unique personalities to the classroom which keeps things fun and interesting. We all contribute to the class and learn together. Second grade is loads of fun!

Andrew Kieke receives American Degree
Local FFA member receives national honor
Andrew Kieke, son of Kevin and Julie Kieke of Kimball, received the American FFA Degree that celebrates academic and professional excellence. The number of FFA members who achieve this goal is less than .05 percent.
Andrew is currently a student at South Dakota State University majoring in Agricultural Systems Technology.
Each year, the National FFA Organization is proud to honor the FFA members who show the utmost dedication to the organization through their desire to develop their potential for premier leadership, personal growth and career success through agricultural education. That honor, the American FFA Degree, is bestowed upon a select group of individuals for years of academic and professional excellence.
Andrew Kieke, an FFA member representing the Kimball FFA Chapter in Kimball, Minn., was selected to join that exclusive list and was awarded the American FFA Degree at the 85th National FFA Convention & Expo in Indianapolis. The convention is known as the largest student gathering in the United States and occurred Oct. 24-27, 2012.
The American FFA Degree is sponsored by Case IH, Farm Credit, Elanco, DuPont Pioneer and Syngenta as a special project of the National FFA Foundation. It recognizes demonstrated ability and outstanding achievements in agricultural business, production, processing or service programs. To be eligible, FFA members must have earned and productively invested $7,500 through a supervised agricultural experience program in which they starty, own or hold a professional position in an existing agriculture enterprise. Recipients must also complete 50 community service hours, as well as demonstrate outstanding leadership abilities and community involvement.
Each recipient of the American FFA Degree received a gold American FFA Degree Key plus a certificate after being on-stage during the convention.
