Saturday, June 1, the Marty Mudcats 14U Fastpitch team participated in the River City Showdown tournament held in Monticello. There were eight teams participating in the tournament and the first place finisher earns a berth to the 2013 National NAFA Fastpitch Tournament.
Marty played two games for pool play to start the tournament.
First off, Marty faced Alexandria the first round and came out swinging away. Marty scored 3 runs in the first inning, 5 runs in the third inning and 2 runs in the fourth inning. Kimball’s defense was solid and pitching was consistent between Emily Utecht and Anna Donnay. Becky Holtz was 2-2 with a run scored and 2 RBI’s, and Madi Libbesmeier was 3-3 with a double and 2 runs scored.
In the second game, Marty played Soderville. The team again came out swinging hot bats beating Soderville 15-1. Madi Libbesmeier was 3-3 with 3 runs scored and 3 RBI’s, and Emily Utecht was 2-2 with 1 run scored. Pitching and defense was sound with Lauren Libbesmeier and Anna Donnay supplying the power on the mound.
The Mudcats moved into the bracket play earning a #1 seed. They played the #8 seed NW Diamonds, and took a solid lead and never turned back, winning the game 21-2. Lauren Libbesmeier and Hedy Robben took control of the mound. Shay Krippner was 3-3 with a double, 2 runs scored, and 5 RBI’s, and Ariel Laabs was 2-2 with a grand slam, 3 runs scored, and 4 RBI’s. Marty moved to the semi-final round v Becker. Emily Utecht was consistent on the mound and shut Becker down. Leading hitters for the Mudcats were Madi Libbesmeier who was 3-3 with 3 runs scored and 3 RBI’s, and Shay Krippner 2-3 with 2 RBI’s. The Mudcats entered the championship game against Buffalo. The team came out in the cold weather and, again, dominated the offensive portion of the ball game scoring 4 runs in the first inning, 4 runs in the second inning, and 3 runs in the third inning. Pitcher, Madi Libbesmeier, and the defense stifled Buffalo and held them to
1 run with Libbesmeier striking out 8 and giving up 2 walks. Madi Libbesmeier aided the offense by going 1-3 with 2 runs scored and 2 RBI’s and Lauren Libbesmeier was 1-2 with 2 RBI’s.
The Mudcats played hard and performed consistently both on the offense and defensive portion of the game. They each earned a trophy and the team earned a
berth to the NAFA National Tournament held in the end of July.
