The Kimball Express played in the June 13-16 Hwy. 55 Tournament at Kimball, and fought their way to the semifinals, where they were ousted by the Cold Spring Springers, 7-4. The Springers’ Zach Femrite went 2 for 3 with a double and an RBI, to lead the Cold Spring Springers past Kimball in the semifinals. Femrite also got the win in two innings of relief. Cold Spring got a 3 for 4 hitting performance from Ryan Holthaus, and his teammate Drew Van Loy belted a solo home run. The Springers improve to 13-1 overall. Brooks Marquardt led Kimball (13-3) going 3 for 4 and Scott Marquardt was 2 for 4 at the plate.
Starting out the tourney on the right foot, the Express handled the Sartell Poneys in a Friday evening game, 5-4. Mathias Hennen threw 6-2⁄3 innings in a seven-inning game to help the Express outlast the Poneys. Jordan Joseph came on to get the final out and earn the save, and Rob Gabrielson took the loss. Joseph went 2 for 3 for the Express. Gabrielson made a valiant effort to help the Poneys’ cause, going 3 for 4, with a double and a two-run home run in the seventh inning.
Game number two for Kimball saw the Express shutting out Hibbing, 3-0, on Saturday, June 15, in a 5:45 start. Matt Dingmann threw a seven-hit shutout and Kyle Winter was 2 for 3, with a double, to lead Kimball to the winner’s bracket victory.
