Express squander late lead, lose to Hawks

By Pat Garry, Staff Writer

The Kimball Express lost a heartbreaker to the host Eden Valley Hawks, 5-4, Sunday evening, June 23, as they let a three-run ninth inning lead, go by the wayside.  Kimball jumped out early, scoring 4 first inning runs.  Riding a 4-1 advantage into the bottom of the ninth, the Express had all but sewn up the victory.  But the Hawks secured the win on 4 runs, featuring a walk-off hit from Joe Thiel and an Express throwing error.  Matt Dingmann got the start and was relieved by Adam Beyer in the sixth inning.  Ben Johnson was charged with the loss.  Offensively, the Express were led by Beyer, who went 3 for 5, including a double and 2 RBIs, followed by Joseph and Brian Marquardt, collecting two hits apiece.
