Mudcats earn fifth place at State

The Marty Mudcats 14U Softball team entered the State Tournament held in Rosemount on July 20-21. The tournament was set up as a double elimination tournament with 20 total teams.

The Mudcats played Chanhassen Blizzard in the first round of the tournament. The Mudcats took an inning to get settled in their surroundings and scored six runs in the second inning and continued with two runs in the 4th and 5th inning. The defense and pitching held the Blizzard to two runs and led the Mudcats to the first victory of the tournament by a score of 10-2. Madi Libbesmeier earned the win on the mound and went 3-3 with a double, triple, two RBI’s and a run scored and Lauren Libbesmeier went 3-3 with a run scored.

The Mudcats moved on to play North Area Red and took a one run lead only to be answered by North Area scoring two runs in the bottom half of the inning. Marty held North Area scoreless and threatened to score both in the 2nd and 3rd innings but left the runners on the bases, however, they scored one run in the 4th and 5th innings to take the lead 3-2. North Area again answered back with a run in the bottom of the 6th inning to tie the game at 3-3. Entering the top of the 7th inning, Marty came out ready to win the game and scored two runs to take the lead 5-3 and held North Area in the bottom of the inning for the win. Madi Libbesmeier earned the win with 7 strikeouts and went 2-4 at the plate with one RBI. Lauren Libbesmeier went 3-3 with an RBI and a run scored, Ariel Laabs went 1-4 with a double, and Amanda Roerick went 1-2 with 2 runs scored. The Mudcats entered the third game of the day meeting up against Forest Lake Maroon. After four innings of play, the score was tied at 4-4. Marty broke the game open scoring 5 runs in the sixth inning and three in the seventh. Forest Lake started rallying scoring two runs in the 7th inning, but Marty shut the door for the victory holding them for a final score of 12-6. Madi Libbesmeier earned the win pitching all seven innings, striking out six, and giving up zero walks. Madi also went 2-4 with a run scored, Anna Donnay went 4-4 with 3 runs scored, Becky Holtz went 3-4 with a double and one RBI, and Ariel Laabs went 2-4 with a double. 

The Mudcats, one of eight teams left in the 20 team tournament, entered Sunday morning having to wait almost two hours for a rain delay and faced a talented opponent Chisago Lakes. Marty had a tough start to the game and gave up 5 runs in the first inning. The Mudcats started chipping away in the 3rd inning and scored two runs bringing the score to 2-5 and scored two more in the 5th inning. The Mudcats couldn’t bring any more runs across the plate in the next two innings and ended the game losing by a score of 4-5. It was a competitive game with both teams having 7 hits, however, the Mudcats stranded 11 runners on the bases lacking a timely hit. Emily Utecht took the loss on the mound striking out two and only giving up two walks. Lauren Libbesmeier went 3-4 with a run scored and Shay Krippner went 2-3 with 2 runs scored. Marty moved on to play Bloomington in the loser bracket and got down 0-3 in the first inning. The Mudcats scored 2 runs in the 3rd inning and Bloomington answered back and scored another run making the score 2-4. The Mudcats rallied in the 7th inning scoring one run but couldn’t get one more to cross the plate and ended the game and the tournament losing 3-4. Madi Libbesmeier took the loss striking out 6 and walking three. Amanda Roerick went 1-2 with a run scored, Hedy Robben went 1-2 with a run scored, Becky Holtz went 1-3 with and one RBI, and Alexa Ruehle went 1-2.

The Mudcats played an excellent tournament raising their level of competition earning a tie for 5th place out of 20 teams. The end result of the tournament was Chisago Lakes taking the championship. This week the Mudcats are looking forward to playing in the NAFA 14U National Tournament on July 25-28 at Miller Park in Eden Prairie.
