Golf Tip of the Week

Chipping and Pitching

There are two basic differences between a chip and a pitch on the golf course.

The chip shot is normally performed close to the green and travels mostly on the ground rather than through the air. A chip shot, like a putt, is generally performed using an “arms only” motion to hit the ball.

The pitch shot uses a regular full-body golf swing, and is generally used from more than 15 yards from the green.

With chipping and pitching shots, I focus on the spot on the green where I want the ball to land. Once I’ve decided where that spot is, my shoulder rotation stroke allows me to get the ball to that spot on the green. Remember, speed control is very important with chipping, pitching and putting.

Express win one, lose one in Highway 55 Tournament

The Kimball Express split a pair of games this past weekend before rains fell and washed out the remainder of the Highway 55 Tournament.w-Express-Regal-out

The Express surged Friday to take a 4-1 victory over Regal. The Express only managed to collect five hits to Regal’s eight.

Kimball, however, took full advantage of its hits by bunching them into one big inning; they scored four times in the second inning. The big hit for the Express was a double by Matt Dingmann knocking in two runs, and landing Dingmann on third on an errant throw. Kimball’s other runs were scored thanks to a Regal error and an RBI single by Austin Ruehle.

Ben Johnson got the pitching win for Kimball allowing just one earned run over seven innings. Johnson worked out of several jams during the game to keep Regal from doing any damage.

In what would be its final tournament game Saturday, the Express lost a hard-fought game 1-0 to Fairmont as Zach Dingmann shined both at the plate and on the mound for Kimball. Dingmann pitched seven strong innings striking out six, surrendering three walks and giving up five hits including a one-run homer in the fourth that was all Fairmont needed.

At the plate Dingmann was 2-for-3 with a pair of singles in the fourth and sixth innings.
