When Tom Marquardt laced on his spikes for the Kimball amateur baseball team in 1975, he had no idea that almost 40 years later he would still be doing that.
And even further from his mind then was that he would some day be donning the Kimball uniform alongside three of his sons.
However, that is exactly how the story has unfolded for the modest ’76 KAHS graduate. Today, Tom manages the Express while sons Scott, Brooks and Brian are players. Combined, they have 91 years’ experience playing for Kimball.
And, if you count Tom’s older brother, Ron, that adds a couple more years to the mix. Ron, who is deceased, played for Kimball for a couple of years before Tom began playing.
Kimball Golf Club Driving Range Demo Day
A great day last Friday, April 25, as golfers tried out new equipment.
Opening season play
The first rounds of golf played at Kimball Golf Club this year were recorded by Ida South and Sharon Alvord for the women, and Matthew Sorenson and his guest William Schalow from Alexandria for the men. The golf course opened in beautiful condition!
Scheduling a tee time
Golf is always scheduled – 9 or 18 holes - by making a tee time at the club, either on the spur of the moment or well in advance. At the Kimball Golf Club this year we have a new web site – kimballgolf
club.com – providing for online tee time reservations, or call the clubhouse at (320) 398-2285. The clubhouse, and play, is open from sunup to sundown.
As this, the 49th season of the Central Valley League begins, several teams are vying to win their respective divisions and advance to the regional tournament.
Following is an outlook for the season. (Luxemburg and St. Augusta did not respond.)
Cold Spring Rockies
The Rockies are coming off a successful 2013 CVL – a season that found them coming up one win short of qualifying for the state tournament. For the past decade, the Rockies have consistently been region tournament participants, but have not been back to the State Tournament since their appearance in 2008.
The 2014 roster is filled with a mix of veterans as well as some talented young players. Manager Jeff Lindbloom is expecting great depth this year.
Welcome to all!
Kimball Golf Club – 18 holes and the driving range – Open! Join us for a new clubs demonstration from noon to 4 p.m. Friday, April 25, on the driving range (free). Hit some balls with the latest clubs. Call the clubhouse for details at (320) 398-2285.
Golf Tip of the Week
If you want to knock shots off your game, spend as much time chipping and putting as you can as you are hitting balls on the driving range.
Think of when you go to the practice range to work on your golf game. What club do you use when you first start practicing? A Driver? That is usually the club of choice.
This weekly feature will take a look back at some of the biggest names and games in Central Valley League history.
The CVL has always been a competitive league. And in the early days, it was the focal point for many living in the small towns that comprise the league.
On any given Sunday from mid-April to summer’s end, hundreds would turn out for contests between towns that were situated mere miles apart.
The winner of that week’s game would have bragging rights for that week and at least until the two teams squared off again.
Sometimes the games became contentious between players, fans, and sometimes even the umpires. One story is told in and around Pearl Lake of an umpire who made a number of questionable calls during a contest that Pearl Lake eventually lost.
