The Ken Helling Golf Scramble was held on Saturday, May 4, at the Kimball Golf Course benefiting the Kimball-Eden Valley-Watkins Girls and Boys Golf team. Although it was an unseasonably cold day, teams came out and enjoyed a round of golf, ate a great meal, and won fabulous prizes. This year’s champions, The Nuts with Jason Huschle, Butch Stang, Dan Stang, and Tyler Stang, shot 5 under par to edge out the competition. The Kimball-Eden Valley-Watkins girls’ and boys’ golf team would like to thank our hole and individual sponsors, the businesses who donated door prizes, and Kimball Golf Club for supporting the golf teams and making the 2013 Ken Helling Golf Scramble a huge success.

It wasn’t completely a given that the Clippers would be using baseballs rather than snowballs in the Central Valley League opener Sunday, May 5, at Luxemburg. As it turned out, the orbs were trimmed with red seams.
Finally getting the season under way, Watkins lost the initial outing to Luxemburg, 4-2. The Clippers ticked the scoreboard first, following two walks and a passed ball, allowing Dan Berg to hit a sacrifice fly, making it 1-0. The Brewers’ Derek Orth smacked a second inning solo shot, leveling the game at 1-1. Inning five started with an error, then a base hit, a fly out, followed by a 2-run single, then a strikeout and a walk. The runner on third scored on a passed ball and a strikeout ended the flurry. The Brewers’ 4-1 lead held until the ninth, when the Clippers tried to rally, but managed only 1 run. With two outs, Adam Hiltner walked, Tyler Long was hit by a pitch, and Berg singled to score Hiltner from second. Beier grounded out to short to end the game.
