Sunday, Jan. 12, a Stearns County Sheriff’s Deputy made a traffic stop on a 2011 Chevrolet Malibu for a traffic violation. The initial stop occurred at CR 136, just north of 43rd Ave., in the city of St. Augusta. During the stop, the deputy noted signs of intoxication on the driver. When the deputy asked the driver, a 17-year old male, to step out of the car to undergo field sobriety testing, he put the car back in gear and fled. The pursuit went south on 43rd Avenue, westbound on Co. Rd. 141 to MN State Highway 15, and then north into the former townsite of Luxemburg. Just north of Luxemburg, the driver of the Malibu was passing other vehicles and caused a southbound truck to take evasive action and drive into the west ditch. The vehicle continued north on Hwy 15 into the city of St. Cloud. Near the I-94 overpass on Hwy 15, the driver of the Malibu jumped out of the still moving car. The car continued on for several hundred more feet. The driver sustained injuries when he exited the car. He was treated on the scene by Gold Cross Ambulance and taken to the St. Cloud Hospital for treatment of his injuries. The Stearns County Sheriff’s Office was assisted by the St. Cloud Police Department, Waite Park Police Department, MN State Patrol and Gold Cross Ambulance. The incident remains under investigation.
